Rogue waves: Analytical predictions

چکیده
Rogue waves observed in the ocean and elsewhere are often modelled by certain solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, describing the modulational instability of a plane wave and the subsequent development of multi-phase nonlinear wavetrains. In this paper, we describe how integrability and application of the inverse scattering transform can be used to construct a class of explicit asymptotic solutions which describe this process. We discuss the universal mechanism of the onset of multi-phase nonlinear wave (rogue waves) through the sequence of succesive multi-breather wavetrains. Some applications to ocean waves and laboratory experiments are presented.

Controlling the Occurrence of Rogue Waves in an Optically Injected Semiconductor Laser via Changing The Injection Strength
The rouge waves in an optically injected semiconductor lasers are receiving a lot of interest. In this work, the generating and controlling of the rogue waves in semiconductor lasers have been investigated. For this purpose, the laser’s rate equations are solved numerically in a specified time interval, then the field amplitude and the intensity versus time are calculated and analyzed. To solve...
متن کاملVector rogue waves and baseband modulation instability in the defocusing regime.
We report and discuss analytical solutions of the vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describe rogue waves in the defocusing regime. This family of solutions includes bright-dark and dark-dark rogue waves. The link between modulational instability (MI) and rogue waves is displayed by showing that only a peculiar kind of MI, namely baseband MI, can sustain rogue-wave formation. The existe...
متن کاملSensitivity of Oceanic Rogue Waves Predictions to Measurements Uncertainties
Here we pose and answer the question of predictability of oceanic rogue waves: “How soon can we predict a rogue wave?”. We answer this question by considering, in its most general form, the governing Laplace’s equation with fully nonlinear boundary conditions. We look into a large number of rogue wave events, and discovered a statistically converged predictability time-scales which is a functio...
متن کاملPredictability horizon of oceanic rogue waves
Prediction is a central goal and a yet-unresolved challenge in the investigation of oceanic rogue waves. Here we define a horizon of predictability for oceanic rogue waves and derive, via extensive computational experiments, a statistically converged predictability time scale for these structures. We show that this time scale is a function of the sea state (i.e., severity of the ambient ocean w...
متن کاملFew-cycle optical rogue waves: complex modified Korteweg-de Vries equation.
In this paper, we consider the complex modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation as a model of few-cycle optical pulses. Using the Lax pair, we construct a generalized Darboux transformation and systematically generate the first-, second-, and third-order rogue wave solutions and analyze the nature of evolution of higher-order rogue waves in detail. Based on detailed numerical and analytical i...
